{"id":20732,"date":"2019-03-14T02:00:54","date_gmt":"2019-03-14T01:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saporedicina.com\/english\/?p=20732"},"modified":"2022-02-15T13:06:46","modified_gmt":"2022-02-15T12:06:46","slug":"review-travel-to-china-book","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saporedicina.com\/english\/review-travel-to-china-book\/","title":{"rendered":"Review of &#8220;Travel to China: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go&#8221; Book"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saporedicina.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/review-ebook-travel-to-china.jpg\" title=\"Review of Travel to China: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go Book\"  alt=\"Review of Travel to China: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go Book\" width=\"700\" height=\"376\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20733\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.saporedicina.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/review-ebook-travel-to-china.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.saporedicina.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/review-ebook-travel-to-china-300x161.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><span class=\"credits\">\u00a9 Josh Summers<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In this article I&#8217;m going to review <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B07MQWMPK5\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=saporedicina-20&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;creativeASIN=B07MQWMPK5&#038;linkId=385f5d63748978220186e45d0ef35c51\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Travel to China: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go<\/a><\/strong>, the new book (and ebook) written by Josh Summers.<\/p>\n<p>Even though I have never personally met Josh, I know his website, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farwestchina.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Far West China<\/a>, since 2012, as it&#8217;s by far the most comprehensive website for people that want to travel to Xinjiang Province (and that&#8217;s where I went in October 2012). <\/p>\n<p>Since then, I have chatted with him a couple of times, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saporedicina.com\/english\/living-in-xinjiang-interview-with-josh-of-farwestchina\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">and even interviewed him for SDC<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>When he told me he published a new book about traveling to China, I went ahead and bought it on Amazon.com. Last week I found the time to read it during my trip from Ho Chi Minh to Hong Kong, and today I&#8217;m writing this short review. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"book-travel-to-china-1\">What will you find in this book?<\/h2>\n<p> <strong><!--more--><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First of all, this is not a book where you will find information about any particular destination, i.e. do not expect the Lonely Planet. <\/p>\n<p>This is a practical book, relatively short and to the point (around 206 pages) that will explain to you how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saporedicina.com\/english\/travel-china-newborn\/\" >travel to China<\/a>. Here a rough index of what you will find on it: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What to expect from a trip to China;<\/li>\n<li>When you need a visa for China and how to get it;<\/li>\n<li>How to prepare your trip (documents, vaccines, money, packing list, etc);<\/li>\n<li>The different kind of accomodations; <\/li>\n<li>Transportation systems in China;<\/li>\n<li>Internet and mobile phones;<\/li>\n<li>Suggestions on how to deal with the language;<\/li>\n<li>Hospitals and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saporedicina.com\/english\/travel-insurance-china\/\" >travel insurance<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"book-travel-to-china-2\">What do I like about this book?<\/h2>\n<p>I like the fact that it was written based on  information collected this year, by somebody that knows China in and out, and lives a &#8220;normal&#8221; life in this country. <\/p>\n<p>This may seem obvious, but believe me, it&#8217;s not.<\/p>\n<p>I read pretty much every &#8220;travel to China&#8221;, &#8220;live in China&#8221;, or &#8220;work in China&#8221; book that has been published during the last 15 years. I did so because, when it comes to China, I&#8217;m always curious, eager to learn more, and interested in different points of view. <\/p>\n<p>And the problem is that most of these books are either completely outdated (China changes FAST), or target high end expats that live in a service apartment in San Li Tun, paid by their company back in US (which was common in the past, but now it&#8217;s rather the exception, and thus is not relevant to most people).<\/p>\n<p>I like the fact that Josh is an extremely analytic person (a bit like me), and thus breaks down each step of each procedure (for instance on how to get a visa exemption, or how to get a Chinese SIM card), in a way that is easy to understand. <\/p>\n<p>Because, see, China is counter intuitive. <\/p>\n<p>You might think that ordering food in a restaurant is difficult, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saporedicina.com\/english\/learn-chinese-online-free\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">because you don&#8217;t speak Chinese<\/a>. However, you will see that many restaurants include photos of the food in their menus (or even offer menus in English, in the most touristic spots). <\/p>\n<p>And Chinese people are full or resources&#8230; if you don&#8217;t understand, they will probably bring you to the kitchen and let you point at the food you want (it happened to me many times, in rural China). <\/p>\n<p>Conversely, you might think that updating your Instagram account will be easy, as after all you will just need a wi-fi connection&#8230;. until you discover that it&#8217;s blocked and you need a special software, called VPN, to access it.<\/p>\n<p>I like the fact that  he wrote this book with the goal or giving you a clear idea of what you will find once you land into China, and most important, he succeeded in his goal. <\/p>\n<p>I like the fact that the book is short and to the point. As I said, I read it all in 3 hours, during my flight. <\/p>\n<p>I like the fact that he rarely gets into the trap of &#8220;China clich\u00e9s&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>Finally, I like the fact that it&#8217;s relatively cheap. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"book-travel-to-china-3\">How could the book be improved?<\/h2>\n<p>As I said, the book is well-written and well-structured. And, unless you start to get into the specific of each destinations (what to see in Beijing, what hotel to book in Shanghai, etc), I think it covers all the main points. <\/p>\n<p>The most important thing, in China, is that everything changes fast.
