Besides giving you the &#8220;exact&#8221; definition of single expressions, I will also insert the literal translation, which is not unusually more suitable than the &#8220;exact&#8221; one for conveying the metaphorical sense that the Chinese author wishes to express.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u77ee\u5b50\u91cc\u62d4\u5c06\u519b  (Aizi li ba jiangjun) \/ \u77ec\u5b50\u91cc\u62d4\u5c06\u519b  (cuozi li ba jiangjun)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It would literally be \u201cchoose the general from among the lower ones\u201d, or choose the best among those available (we could also say, \u201cchoose the least worst\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example: <\/p>\n<p>\u542c\u8bf4\u56fe\u8499\u591a\u5f97\u4e86\u4f5c\u6587\u6bd4\u8d5b\u7b2c\u4e00\u540d\u3002\u4ed6\u5440\uff1f\u4e00\u5b9a\u662f\u77ee\u5b50\u91cc\u62d4\u5c06\u519b\u62d4\u51fa\u6765\u7684\u3002<br \/>\nT\u012bngshu\u014d t\u00fa m\u00e9ng du\u014d d\u00e9le zu\u00f2w\u00e9n b\u01d0s\u00e0i d\u00ec-y\u012b m\u00edng. For sure it must have been the least bad. <\/p>\n<p><strong>\u5305\u5728\u6211\u8eab\u4e0a (Bao zai wo shen shang) <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It literally would be \u201cI wrap it with my body\u201d, or leave everything to me; you can count on me; I&#8217;ll take care of it.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example: <strong><!--more--><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u522b\u62c5\u5fc3\uff0c\u4f60\u513f\u5b50\u5927\u5b66\u6bd5\u4e1a\u627e\u5de5\u4f5c\u7684\u4e8b\u60c5\u5305\u5728\u6211\u8eab\u4e0a\uff0c\u4fdd\u8bc1\u4ed6\u6708\u85aa\u4e24\u5343\u6b27\u4ee5\u4e0a\u3002<br \/>\nBi\u00e9 d\u0101nx\u012bn, n\u01d0 \u00e9rzi d\u00e0xu\u00e9 b\u00ecy\u00e8 zh\u01ceo g\u014dngzu\u00f2 de sh\u00ecqing b\u0101o z\u00e0i w\u01d2 sh\u0113nshang, b\u01ceozh\u00e8ng t\u0101 yu\u00e8x\u012bn li\u01cengqi\u0101n \u014du y\u01d0sh\u00e0ng.<br \/>\nDon&#8217;t worry, I&#8217;ll take care of finding a job for your son once he finishes college; I guarantee that his monthly salary will be more than two thousand Euros a month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u628a\u6b7b\u4eba\u8bf4\u6d3b (Ba si ren shuo huo)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It would literally be \u201cbring the dead back to life by talking\u201d, or to be persuasive; to have a sharp tongue.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example: <\/p>\n<p>\u662f\u8fd9\u6837\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u4fe9\u4e00\u8d77\u53bb\u6709\u5f88\u591a\u597d\u5904\uff1a\u7b2c\u4e00\u2026\u2026\uff0c\u7b2c\u4e8c\u2026\u2026\u3002\u884c\u4e86\uff0c\u4f60\u771f\u662f\u4e2a\u628a\u6b7b\u4eba\u8bf4\u6d3b\u7684\u4eba\uff0c\u6211\u8ddf\u4f60\u53bb\u5427\u3002<br \/>\nSh\u00ec zh\u00e8y\u00e0ng, w\u01d2menli\u01ce y\u012b\u0320q\u01d0 q\u00f9 y\u01d2u h\u011bn du\u014d h\u01ceochu: d\u00ec-y\u012b\u2026\u2026, d\u00ec-\u00e8r\u2026\u2026. I&#8217;ll come with you!<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u6446\u5728\u684c\u9762\u513f\u4e0a (Bai zai zhuomianr shang) <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This would literally be \u201cto put on the table\u201d, or make the problem known publicly and make sure everybody knows.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example: <\/p>\n<p>\u6709\u4e9b\u4e8b\u60c5\u4e3a\u4ec0\u4e48\u4e0d\u544a\u8bc9\u6211\u4eec\uff1f\u6211\u771f\u5e0c\u671b\u4f60\u540e\u6765\u628a\u6240\u91cd\u5927\u7684\u4e8b\u60c5\u90fd\u6446\u5728\u684c\u9762\u513f\u4e0a\u3002<br \/>\nY\u01d2uxi\u0113 sh\u00ecqing w\u00e8ish\u00e9nme b\u00f9 g\u00e0osu w\u01d2men?
