{"id":15088,"date":"2017-08-25T03:00:21","date_gmt":"2017-08-25T02:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saporedicina.com\/english\/?p=15088"},"modified":"2022-02-03T12:57:44","modified_gmt":"2022-02-03T11:57:44","slug":"chinese-numeric-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saporedicina.com\/english\/chinese-numeric-system\/","title":{"rendered":"The Chinese numeric system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saporedicina.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/numbers-in-chinese.jpg\" title=\"The Chinese numeric system\" alt=\"The Chinese numeric system\" width=\"700\" height=\"376\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15401\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to my personal experience, the Chinese numeric system is one of the most complicated aspects of the Chinese language, especially when it comes to numbers greater than 10,000. <\/p>\n<p>For this reason I decided to write this article in the hopes that I can help those poor students of the Chinese language that are facing this tough subject! <\/p>\n<h2>Numbers 1 to 10<\/h2>\n<p>The numbers in the left-hand column are used at all times, those in the right-hand column are used only in banking situations and are what are found on banknotes. <\/p>\n<p>The writing is different so as to avoid scams since it would be easy to add strokes to the numbers on the left. The numbers on the right are pronounced the same way as those on the left and are commonly known as daxie shuzi \u5927\u5199\u6570\u5b57 (capital numbers). <\/p>\n<p>Here they are: <strong><!--more--><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Y\u012b,  \u4e00, \u58f9<br \/>\n\u00e8r, \u4e8c,\t\t\t\t\u8d30<br \/>\ns\u0101n, \u4e09,\t\t\t\t\u53c1<br \/>\ns\u00ec, \u56db\t,\t\t\t\t\u8086<br \/>\nw\u01d4, \u4e94,<br \/>\nli\u00f9, \u516d,\t\t\t\t\u9646<br \/>\nq\u012b, \u4e03,\t\t\t\t\u67d2<br \/>\nb\u0101, \u516b,\t\t\t\t\u634c<br \/>\nji\u01d4, \u4e5d,\t\t\t\t\u7396<br \/>\nsh\u00ed, \u5341,\t\t\t\t\u62fe<\/p>\n<p>Composing the numbers between 1 and 99 is easy, here&#8217;s some examples: <\/p>\n<p>12 \u5341\u4e8c(ten plus two);<br \/>\n24 \u4e8c\u5341\u56db (two times ten plus four);<br \/>\n58 \u4e94\u5341\u516b (five times ten plus eight);<br \/>\n99 \u4e5d\u5341\u4e5d (nine times ten plus nine).<\/p>\n<h2>Numbers greater than 100<\/h2>\n<p>What was mentioned previously also goes for units over 100, so here too you&#8217;ll find a variant of these units that are mainly used in banking procedures but only for hundreds and thousands.<\/p>\n<p>b\u01cei \u767e (Hundred) \t\t \ty\u012bb\u01cei \u4e00\u767e (100)\t\t\u4f70 (\u5927\u5199\u6570\u5b57)<br \/>\n qi\u0101n \u5343 (Thousand)\t\t\ty\u012bqi\u0101n \u4e00\u5343 (1,000)\t\u4edf (\u5927\u5199\u6570\u5b57)<br \/>\nw\u00e0n  \u4e07 (Ten Thousand)\t \ty\u012bw\u00e0n \u4e00\u4e07 (10,000)<br \/>\ny\u00ec \u4ebf (Hundred Million)\t\ty\u012by\u00ec\u4e00\u4ebf (100,000,000)\t <\/p>\n<h2>Numbers up to 9,999<\/h2>\n<p>When it comes to numbers up to 9,999 it isn&#8217;t too difficult, here are some examples: <\/p>\n<p>325 = \u4e09\u767e\u4e8c\u5341\u4e94\uff1b<br \/>\n478 = \u56db\u767e\u4e03\u5341\u516b\uff1b<br \/>\n876 = \u516b\u767e\u4e03\u5341\u516d\uff1b<br \/>\n549 = \u4e94\u767e\u56db\u5341\u4e5d;<br \/>\n1,670 = \u4e00\u5343\u516d\u767e\u4e03\u5341\uff1b<br \/>\n2,489 = \u4e24\u5343\u56db\u767e\u516b\u5341\u4e5d\uff1b<br \/>\n3,482 = \u4e09\u5343\u56db\u767e\u516b\u5341\u4e8c;<br \/>\n9,999 = \u4e5d\u5343\u4e5d\u767e\u4e5d\u5341\u4e5d.<\/p>\n<h2>The number 0 (l\u00edng,\u96f6)<\/h2>\n<p>The number \u96f6 can be used when the place for tens or hundreds is empty so long as there&#8217;s a number before or after the zero. For example: <\/p>\n<p>7,066 = \u4e03\u5343\u96f6\u516d\u5341\u516d<br \/>\n9,102 = \u4e5d\u5343\u4e00\u767e\u96f6\u4e8c<\/p>\n<p>When there are two consecutive empty spaces, the zero is only used once:<\/p>\n<p>6,006= \u516d\u5343\u96f6\u516d<\/p>\n<h2>Numbers from 10,000 to 100,000,000<\/h2>\n<p>Now here&#8217;s the hard part: numbers from 10,000 to 100,000,000.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese distinguish the categories of \u201ctens\u201d, \u201chundreds\u201d, \u201cthousands\u201d, \u201ctens of thousands\u201d, \u201chundreds of millions\u201d. The numbers between ten thousand and a hundred million are are read in terms of &#8220;tens of thousands\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Here they are: <\/p>\n<p>1,000 \u4e00\u5343 (a thousand);<br \/>\n10,000 \u4e00\u4e07 (a \u201cten thousand\u201d);<br \/>\n100,000 \u5341\u4e07 (ten \u201cten thousands\u201d);<br \/>\n1,000,000 \u4e00\u767e\u4e07 (a hundred \u201cten of thousands\u201d);<br \/>\n10,000,000 \u4e00\u5343\u4e07 (a thousand \u201cten thousands\u201d);<br \/>\n100,000,000 \u4e00\u4ebf\uff1b1,000,000,000 \u5341\u4ebf.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few examples: <\/p>\n<p>25,250 = \u4e24\u4e07\u4e94\u5343\u4e8c\u767e\u4e94\u5341, or 2 \u201cten thousands\u201d plus 5,250. <\/p>\n<p>225,250 = \u4e8c\u5341\u4e8c\u4e07\u4e94\u5343\u4e8c\u767e\u4e94\u5341, or 22 \u201cten thousands\u201d plus ,5250.<\/p>\n<p>2,225,250 = \u4e24\u767e\u4e8c\u5341\u4e8c\u4e07\u4e94\u5343\u4e8c\u767e\u4e94\u5341, or 222 \u201cten thousands\u201d plus 5,250.<\/p>\n<p>22,225,250 = \u4e24\u5343\u4e8c\u767e\u4e8c\u5341\u4e8c\u4e07\u4e94\u5343\u4e8c\u767e\u4e94\u5341, or 2,222 \u201cten thousands\u201d plus 5,250.<\/p>\n<p>522,225,250 = \u4e94\u4ebf\u4e24\u5343\u4e8c\u767e\u4e8c\u5341\u4e8c\u4e07\u4e94\u5343\u4e8c\u767e\u4e94\u5341, or 5 \u201chundreds of millions\u201d plus 2,222 \u201cten thousands\u201d plus 5,250.<\/p>\n<p>987,342,695,178 = \u4e5d\u5343\u516b\u767e\u4e03\u5341\u4e09\u4ebf\u56db\u5343\u4e8c\u767e\u516d\u5341\u4e5d\u4e07\u4e94\u5343\u4e00\u767e\u4e03\u5341\u516b, or 9,873 \u201chundreds of millions\u201d plus 4,269 \u201cten thousands\u201d plus 5,178.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a trick that I use to compose large numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take this number: 225,250. <\/p>\n<p>Reading the number from the right, let&#8217;s put a comma on the fourth number: 22,5250<\/p>\n<p>Every four units corresponds to a w\u00e0n, so a \u201cten thousand\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>If you follow the comma, now we have 22 \u201cten thousands\u201d and then 5,250 (this is easy to compose).<\/p>\n<p>Final result: \u4e8c\u5341\u4e8c\u4e07\u4e94\u5343\u4e8c\u767e\u4e94\u5341.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s analyze another number: 2,225,250.<\/p>\n<p>The same procedure, we&#8217;ll read the number starting from the right and put a comma on the fourth number: 225,5250<br \/>\nIf every four units correspond to a w\u00e0n, it means that we have 225 \u201cten thousands\u201d, so now all you need to do is make 5,250.<\/p>\n<p>Final result: \u4e24\u767e\u4e8c\u5341\u4e8c\u4e07\u4e94\u5343\u4e8c\u767e\u4e94\u5341.<br \/>\nLet&#8217;s analyze another number: 22,174,600.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s read the number starting from the right and put a comma on the fourth number: 2217,4600. Here we have 2,217 \u201cten thousands\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Final result: \u4e24\u5343\u4e24\u767e\u5341\u4e03\u4e07\u56db\u5343\u516d\u767e.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s look at a huge number: 987,342,695,178.<\/p>\n<p>The same reasoning applies, let&#8217;s put commas after every four numbers: 9873,4269,5178.<\/p>\n<p>This time however we start with \u201chundreds of millions\u201d, so y\u00ec \u4ebf (Hundred million). Moreover, this time we&#8217;ll start from the left since the number is too long: so we have 9,873 \u201chundreds of millions\u201d, 4,269 \u201cten thousands\u201d and 5,178.<\/p>\n<p>Final result: \u4e5d\u5343\u516b\u767e\u4e03\u5341\u4e09\u4ebf\u56db\u5343\u4e24\u767e\u516d\u5341\u4e5d\u4e07\u4e94\u5343\u4e00\u767e\u4e03\u5341\u516b.<\/p>\n<h2>When to use er\u4e8c and when to use liang \u4e24?<\/h2>\n<p>Both express the meaning of \u201c2\u201d. The main difference is that \u4e24 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saporedicina.com\/english\/classifiers-chinese-language\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is used in combination with classifiers<\/a>, in numerical constructions, such as: liang ben shu \u4e24\u672c\u4e66 (two books).<\/p>\n<p>In composing numbers, \u4e24 is acceptable only in front of bai \u767e and qian\u5343, so we can have \u4e24\u767e (two hundred) or \u4e8c\u767e (two hundred); \u4e24\u5343 (two thousand) or \u4e8c\u5343 (two thousand). <\/p>\n<p>The difference in use depends only on where you live, but the Chinese will understand all the same.<\/p>\n<h2>Ordinal numbers<\/h2>\n<p>To make ordinal numbers all you need to do is use the prefix D\u00ec\u7b2c before cardinal numbers:<\/p>\n<p>D\u00ec-y\u012b \u7b2c\u4e00 (the first)<br \/>\nd\u00ec-\u00e8r \u7b2c\u4e8c (the second)<br \/>\nd\u00ec-s\u0101n \u7b2c\u4e09 (the third)<\/p>\n<h2>Arithmetic operations<\/h2>\n<p>Ji\u0101 \u52a0 The sign +<br \/>\nJi\u01cen \u51cf The sign \u2013<br \/>\nCh\u00e9ng \u4e58 The sign x<br \/>\nch\u00fay\u01d0 \u9664\u4ee5 The sign :<br \/>\nd\u011bngy\u00fa \u7b49\u4e8eThe sign =<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few examples: <\/p>\n<p>\u4e00\u52a0\u4e00\u7b49\u4e8e\u591a\u5c11\uff1f\u4e00\u52a0\u4e00\u7b49\u4e8e\u4e8c<br \/>\nY\u012b ji\u0101y\u012b d\u011bngy\u00fa du\u014dshao?
