It&#8217;s a language that&#8217;s rather vulgar,crass and simple but its intrinsic meaning can be quite profound and eloquent. <\/p>\n<p>Slang has always been a part of life for the Chinese and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saporedicina.com\/english\/study-chinese-in-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anyone wishing to study this world<\/a> must also immerse themselves in this type of language. To give an example, let&#8217;s use the word (\u6298, she) that means \u201cto break, break apart, to bend, to flex\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>In slang you can use \u201cshe\u201d for another meaning, such as: \u6211\u7684\u8003\u8bd5\u6298\u4e86  (wo de kaoshi she le), which means:  \u201cmy test went badly\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In this article I&#8217;ll seek to list the most common slang expressions (in alphabetical order). <\/p>\n<p>Here they are: <\/p>\n<p><strong>\u554a\u6728\u6797 (A mu lin),  \u201cstupid person\u201d (literally a piece of wood)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u4ed6\u771f\u662f\u4e2a\u554a\u6728\u6797 (Ta zhen shi ge a mu lin): \u201che is truly stupid\u201d.<strong><!--more--><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u516b\u4e5d\u4e0d\u79bb\u5341 (Ba jiu bu li shi) \u201cmostly correct\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u4ed6\u7684\u4f30\u8ba1\u90fd\u516b\u4e5d\u4e0d\u79bb\u5341 (Ta de gu ji dou ba jiu bu li shi) \u201ctheir predictions are mostly corrrect\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u767d\u642d (bai da) \u201cto be useless; futile; to do something in vain\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u627e\u5979\u4e5f\u767d\u642d\uff0c\u5979\u4e0d\u7231\u4f60\u4e86 (zhaodao ta ye bai da, ta bu ai ni le) \u201ceven if you find her, it&#8217;s useless. She doesn&#8217;t love you anymore\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u767d\u73a9\u513f (bai wanr) \u201ca little game or joke\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u5bf9\u6211\u6765\u8bf4\uff0c\u559d\u4e00\u74f6\u5564\u9152\u7b80\u76f4\u662f\u767d\u73a9\u513f (dui wo lai shuo, he yi ping pijiu jianzhi shi bai wanr) \u201cfor me, drinking a bottle of beer is just a little joke\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u7172\u7535\u8bdd\u7ca5 (bao dian hua zhou) \u201cto boil the telephone in the soup\u201d (metaphor for someone who talks a lot on the phone) <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u56e0\u4e3a\u5979\u7231\u7172\u7535\u8bdd\u7ca5\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u5979\u7684\u7535\u8bdd\u8d39\u6bcf\u6b21\u90fd\u5f88\u9ad8 (yinwei ta ai bao dian hua zhou, suoyi ta de dianhua fei mei ci dou hen gao)  \u201cever since she started talking a long time on the phone, her telephone bills are higher each time\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u80cc (bei) \u201cto be very unfortunate\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u6700\u8fd1\u6211\u7279\u522b\u80cc (zuijin wo tebie bei) \u201clately I am particularly unfortunate\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u5907\u4e0d\u4f4f (bei bu zhu) \u201cmaybe\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u6211\u7684\u670b\u53cb\u5907\u4e0d\u4f4f\u5df2\u7ecf\u53bb\u8fc7\u91cd\u5e86 (wo de pengyou bei bu zhu yijing qu guo Chongqing) \u201cMaybe my friend has been to Chongqing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u957f\u820c\u5987 (chang she fu) \u201cflirt\u201d  <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u4e00\u4ef6\u4e0d\u8d77\u773c\u7684\u4e8b\u60c5\u80fd\u8ba9\u957f\u820c\u5987\u8bf4\u534a\u5929 (yi jian bu qi yan de shiqing neng rang chang she fu shuo ban tian) \u201csomething minor can have the flirts talking about it for half the day\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u7092\u51b7\u996d (chao leng fan) \u201crepeat the same thing many times\u201d (literally: fry cold rice)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u7ecf\u7406\u5728\u9664\u5915\u591c\u7684\u9910\u684c\u4e0a\u6bcf\u5e74\u6dfb\u4e00\u9053\u7092\u51b7\u996d (jingli zai chuxi ye de can zhuo shang tian yi dao chao leng fan) \u201cthe director always arranges the same thing for New Year&#8217;s Eve\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u7092\u9c7f\u9c7c (chao you yu) \u201cto be laid off\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u4ed6\u88ab\u516c\u53f8\u7092\u9c7f\u9c7c\u4e86 (ta bei gongsi chao you yu le) \u201che was laid off by the company\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u5403\u9519\u836f\u4e86 (chi cuo yao le) \u201cgot their medicine wrong\u201d (indicates that someone is acting strangely)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u770b\u8d77\u6765\u4ed6\u5f88\u5947\u602a\uff0c\u4e0d\u662f\u5403\u9519\u836f\u4e86\u5427\uff1f(kanqilai ta hen qiguai, bu shi chi cuo yao le ba?) \u201che seems strange, has he got his medicine wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u6751\u59d1 (cun gu) \u201cgirl from the country\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u5728\u4e2d\u56fd\u8fd8\u6709\u5f88\u591a\u6751\u59d1 (zai Zhongguo hai you hen duo cun gu) \u201cIn China there are lots of girls from the country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u6413\u9ebb (cuo ma) \u201cto play Majiang\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u6211\u4e0d\u4f1a\u6413\u9ebb (wo bu hui cuo ma) \u201cI don&#8217;t know how to play Majiang\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u6253\u8f66 (da che) \u201cto take a taxi\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u5728\u91cd\u5e86\u7684\u65f6\u5019\uff0c\u6211\u7ecf\u5e38\u6253\u8f66 (zai Chongqing de shihou, wo jingchang da che) \u201cwhen I&#8217;m in Chongqing I often take a taxi\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u6253\u4e00\u67aa\u6362\u4e00\u4e2a\u5730\u65b9 (da yi qiang huan yi ge difang) \u201cto change frequently\u201d (one&#8217;s work)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u5e74\u8f7b\u4eba\u559c\u6b22\u603b\u559c\u6b22\u6253\u4e00\u67aa\u6362\u4e00\u4e2a\u5730\u65b9\uff0c\u5bfb\u627e\u66f4\u597d\u7684\u5de5\u4f5c (nianqing ren xihuan zong xihuan da yi qiang huan yi ge difang, xunzhao geng hao de gongzuo) \u201cyoung people like to always change and look for better jobs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u5927\u9f3b\u5b50 (da bizi) \u201cbig noses\u201d (metaphor for foreigners)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u4ece\u90a3\u513f\u8fc7\u6765\u4e86\u4e00\u4e2a\u5927\u9f3b\u5b50 (cong nar guolai le yi ge da bizi) \u201ca big nose has come from there\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u53d1\u798f (fafu) \u201cto get fat\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u4f60\u53c8\u53d1\u798f\u4e86 (ni you fafu le) \u201cyou got fat again\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u611f\u5192 (ganmao) \/\u4e0d\u611f\u5192 (bu ganmao) \u201cto have \/ not have interest in something\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u6211\u5bf9\u8a00\u60c5\u7247\u4e0d\u611f\u5192\uff0c\u53cd\u800c\u5bf9\u6050\u6016\u7247\u5f88\u611f\u5192 (wo dui yanqing pian bu ganmao, fan\u2019er dui kongbu pian hen ganmao) \u201cI&#8217;m not interested in romance films; on the contrary I&#8217;m very interested in horror films\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u641e\u4ec0\u4e48\u98de\u673a (gao shenme fei ji) \u201cwhat the devil happened?\u201d (it could also express a complaint about someone)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u4f60\u6628\u5929\u641e\u4ec0\u4e48\u98de\u673a\uff1f (ni zuotian gao shenme feiji?) \u201cWhat the heck did you do yesterday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u54e5\u4eec\u513f (ge menr) \u201cbro\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u563f\uff0c\u54e5\u4eec\u513f\uff0c\u5c0f\u5fc3\u70b9 (hei, ge menr, xiaoxin dian) \u201chey, bro, pay more attention\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u8ddf\u7740\u611f\u89c9\u8d70 (gen zhe ganjue zou) \u201cto do something without much thinking\u201d (literally: to walk by following one&#8217;s perceptions)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u4e0d\u8981\u60f3\u592a\u591a\u5427\uff0c\u8ddf\u7740\u611f\u89c9\u8d70\uff01(bu yao xiang tai duo ba, gen zhe ganjue zou!) \u201cDon&#8217;t overthink it, follow your instincts!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u54c8\u97e9\u65cf (ha han zu) \/\u54c8\u65e5\u65cf (ha ri zu) \u201cyoung Chinese who love Korean or Japanese pop music and TV series\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u5728\u4e2d\u56fd\u6709\u5f88\u591a\u54c8\u97e9\u65cf\u548c\u54c8\u65e5\u65cf (zai Zhongguo you hen duo ha han zu he ha ri zu) \u201cIn China there are lots of fans of Korea and Japan\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u9e21 (ji) \u201cprostitute\u201d (in reality it would be &#8220;chicken&#8221; but since it has the same phonetic sound as \u5993\u5973 ji nu \u201cprostitute\u201d, it&#8217;s used with this second meaning)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u8fd9\u6761\u8857\u4e0a\u665a\u4e0a\u6709\u4e0d\u5c11\u9e21 (zhe tiao jie shang wan shang you bu shao ji) \u201cat night, there are lots of prostitutes on this road\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u6025\u832c\u513f (ji char) \u201curgent matters\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u6bcf\u6b21\u5979\u6765\u627e\u6211\u65f6\uff0c\u6211\u5c31\u77e5\u9053\u53c8\u662f\u6025\u832c\u513f (mei ci ta lai zhao wo shi, wo jiu zhidao you shi ji char) \u201cevery time he gets in touch with me I know it once again is about urgent matters\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u53eb\u5ea7 (jiaozuo) \u201cvery popular\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u771f\u6ca1\u60f3\u5230Gotham\u4f1a\u8fd9\u4e48\u53eb\u5ea7 (zhen mei xiangdao Gotham zheme jiaozuo) \u201cI never imagined that Gotham could become so popular\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u6559\u5934 (jiaotou) \u201ccoach\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u91cd\u5e86\u7bee\u7403\u961f\u8bf7\u4e86\u4e00\u4f4d\u6d0b\u6559\u5934\u6267\u6559 (Chongqing lanqiu dui qing le yi wei yang jiaotou zhijiao) \u201cChongqing&#8217;s basketball team invited a foreign coach to handle training\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u59d0\u4eec\u513f (jie menr) \u201csister\u201d (the opposite of \u54e5\u4eec\u513f)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u4f60\u7684\u59d0\u4eec\u513f\u90fd\u5f88\u60f3\u4f60 (ni de jie menr dou hen xiang ni) \u201call your sisters miss you\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u5361\u54c7\u4f9d (kawayi) Japanese for \u201ccute\u201d (corresponds with the Chinese \u53ef\u7231 and Japanese \u53ef\u611b\u3044)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u591a\u4e48\u5361\u54c7\u4f9d (duo me kawayi!) \u201cso cute!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u4f83\u5927\u5c71 (kan da shan) \u201cto chat\/gab\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u4ed6\u6574\u5929\u4e0d\u5e72\u4e8b\uff0c\u53ea\u77e5\u9053\u4f83\u5927\u5c71 (ta zheng tian bu gan shi, zhi zhidao kan da shan) \u201cshe doesn&#8217;t do anything all day, she only knows how to gab\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u780d\u4ef7 (kan jia) \u201cto cut the price\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u4e0a\u8857\u4e70\u4e1c\u897f\u65f6\u6700\u597d\u5e26\u4e0a\u5979\u3002\u5979\u662f\u780d\u4ef7\u7684\u597d\u624b (shang jie mai dongxi shi ni zuihao dai shang ta. That&#8217;s no surprise if everyone who advertises lets him advertise his own products.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u8fa3\u59b9\u5b50 (lameizi) \u201can angry woman with a cutting tongue and strong as a hot pepper\u201d (a term that&#8217;s used a lot!)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u8ddf\u5979\u6253\u4ea4\u9053\u5c0f\u5fc3\u70b9\uff0c\u5979\u88ab\u8ba4\u4e3a\u662f\u4e2a\u8fa3\u59b9\u5b50 (gen ta da jiao dao xiaoxin dian, ta bei renwei shi ge lameizi) \u201cwatch out for her because she&#8217;s considered a lameizi.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u8001\u65e5 (lao ri) \u201cJapanese Yen\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u624b\u4e0a\u6211\u8fd8\u6709\u4e00\u4e9b\u8001\u65e5 (shoushang wo hai you yi xie lao ri) \u201cI still have a few Yen on hand\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u8001\u5934\u513f (lao tour) \u201can older person\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u5728\u676d\u5dde\u7684\u65f6\u5019\uff0c\u6211\u7684\u90bb\u5c45\u90fd\u662f\u8001\u5934\u513f (zai Hangzhou de shihou, wo de linju dou shi lao tour) \u201cwhen I was in Hangzhou, all my neighbors were elderly\u201d.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u8001\u5916 (lao wai) \u201cforeigners\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u5979\u5ac1\u7ed9\u4e00\u4e2a\u8001\u5916 (ta jia gei yi ge lao wai) \u201cshe married a foreigner\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u7c92\u8c46 (li dou) \u201cmetaphor for Renminbi\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u53ea\u8981\u53e3\u888b\u91cc\u6709\u7c92\u8c46\uff0c\u4f60\u60f3\u5403\u4ec0\u4e48\u90fd\u80fd\u4e70\u5f97\u5230 (zhiyao koudai li you li dou, ni xiang chi shenme dou neng mai de dao) so long as you have some RMB in your pocket, you can buy anything you want to eat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u9753 (liang) \u201cbeautiful\u201d (used mainly in Hong Kong)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u5728\u9999\u6e2f\u6709\u5f88\u591a\u9753\u5973\u751f (zai Xianggang you hen duo liang nu sheng) \u201cin Hong Kong there are lots of beautiful women\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u9753\u4ed4 (liang zai) \u201cgood-looking man \/ handsome guy\u201d (also used in Hong Kong)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u5728\u9999\u6e2f\u6709\u9753\u4ed4\u5417\uff1f(zai Xianggang you liang zai ma?) \u201care there good-looking guys in Hong Kong?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u9a6c\u5927\u5ac2 (ma da sao) \u201chousewife or stay at home\u201d (in the Shanghai dialect, these three words sound respectively like \u201cto go shopping, to wash and to cook)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u6211\u7684\u4e00\u4e2a\u670b\u53cb\u81ea\u4ece\u7ed3\u5a5a\u540e\u5c31\u5f53\u4e0a\u4e86\u9a6c\u5927\u5ac2 (wo de yi ge pengyou zicong jiehun hou jiu dangshang le ma da sao) \u201cwhen my friend got married she became a housewife\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u9a6c\u4ed4 (mazai) \u201cgangster\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u6628\u5929\u4e00\u4e2a\u9a6c\u4ed4\u88ab\u902e\u6355\u4e86 (zuotian yi ge maizai bei daibu le) \u201cyesterday a gangster was arrested\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u7801\u957f\u57ce (ma changcheng) \u201cmetaphor that indicates playing Majiang\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u4e2d\u56fd\u8001\u5934\u513f\u6bcf\u5929\u90fd\u7801\u957f\u57ce (Zhongguo lao tour meitian dou ma changcheng) \u201cthe elderly Chinese play Majiang every day\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u86ee (man) \u201crather\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u4ed6\u86ee\u80fd\u5e72\u7684 (ta man nenggan de) \u201cHe is rather capable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u6ee1\u8138\u8f66\u9053\u6c9f (man lian che dao gou) \u201cmetaphor to describe someone with a wrinkled face, covered in lines\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u4f60\u77a7\u4ed6\u7684\u8138\uff0c\u5df2\u7ecf\u662f\u6ee1\u8138\u8f66\u9053\u6c9f (ni qiao ta de lian, yijing shi man lian che dao gou) \u201clook at her face, it&#8217;s already covered in wrinkles\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u6ee1\u4e16\u754c (man shijie) \u201ceverywhere\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u9ea6\u5f53\u52b3\u6ee1\u4e16\u754c\u90fd\u6709 (Maidanglao man shijie dou you) \u201cMcdonalds are everywhere\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u6ca1\u95e8\u513f (mei menr) \u201cnothing to do \/ no way of escape \/ not have an any idea\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u6ca1\u95e8\u513f\uff0c\u5728\u610f\u5927\u5229\u627e\u5230\u5de5\u4f5c\u771f\u96be (mei menr, zai Yidali zhaodao gongzuo zhen nan) \u201cnothing you can do, finding work in Italy is very difficult.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u6ca1\u8d77\u5b50 (mei qizi) \u201cgood for nothing\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u4ed6\u771f\u6ca1\u8d77\u5b50 (ta zhen mei qizi) \u201cHe is really good for nothing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u6ca1\u4e3b (mei zhu) \u201cnot belonging to anyone\u201d (literally;
