    A frequent question asked of students of Chinese or Japanese is \u201cwhat’s the difference between Chinese and Japanese?<\/strong>\u201d <\/p>\n

    This question, if asked by someone who hasn’t had the good fortune to learn one of these two languages, derives from the simple recognition that both languages use Chinese characters: \u6c49\u5b57 (\u201chanzi\u201d, in Chinese) or \u6f22\u5b57 (\u201ckanji\u201d, in Japanese).<\/p>\n

    Although this question is based on a rather limited premise, there is however a thread between the two languages that ties them inseparably together. <\/p>\n

    Nevertheless, as two rather different languages, it would, therefore, be appropriate to rephrase the question this way: \u201cwhat do Chinese and Japanese have in common?<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

    Main similarities between Chinese and Japanese<\/h2>\n

    Here are what, in my opinion, are the main similarities between the two languages: <\/p>\n

    Nouns<\/h3>\n

    <\/strong><\/p>\n

    The first common aspect of the two languages are the nouns. A noun, as you already know, is a word that designates something and could also be called a “name”. Nouns \u2013 in Chinese, as much as in Japanese \u2013 do not have gender (feminine or masculine) or number (singular or plural). <\/p>\n

    For example, the Italian words \u201cgatto\u201d, \u201cgatta\u201d, \u201cgatte\u201d and \u201cgatti\u201d (cat\/s) all correspond to the Chinese word \u732b (mao) and the Japanese \u732b (neko). <\/p>\n

    This common aspect of Chinese and Japanese render the nouns in these languages easy to use (because they don’t change), but complicated to interpret (because you absolutely cannot know the gender or number \u2013 you’ll need to look at the phrase’s context). <\/p>\n

    The characters (hanzi and kanji) <\/h3>\n

    As described in the proceeding section, both languages use the same character to identify the concept of “cat”, even if the pronunciation is different. <\/p>\n

    Up until the IV century after Christ, the Japanese didn’t have their own form of writing. It was in this period, through the Korean peninsula (a small curiosity that I won’t dwell on in this article: about 60% of the Korean lexicon comes from the Chinese language), that Chinese writing broke into Japan<\/a> in the form of tracts on Buddhism and philosophy (even if it would be better to say “Chinese thought”). <\/p>\n

    In the beginning, only few educated Japanese were able to read Chinese but after a little bit, Chinese characters began to be used to also write Japanese. <\/p>\n

    Naturally a rather big problem arose: the Japanese language already existed (even without a form of writing) and by importing Chinese characters, they also imported the Chinese pronunciation. <\/p>\n

    For this reason, these days the same character can be read in different ways. In Japanese, the reading derived from Chinese is called on yomi<\/em>, while the original Japanese pronunciation is called kun yomi<\/em>. <\/p>\n

    For example, the Chinese character \u5c71 (which in Chinese is pronounced \u201cshan\u201d and means \u201cmountain\u201d), is also found in Japanese with two ways of saying it: in on yomi (derived from the Chinese) you say \u201csan\u201d; in kun yomi (the original Japanese pronunciation) you’d say \u201cyama\u201d. <\/p>\n

    How do you know when to use on yomi or kun yomi? <\/p>\n

    Generally speaking, if a character is alone in a phrase, it is usually read with kun yomi; if it is accompanied by other characters to form a composite word, it would be read with on yomi. <\/p>\n

    For example, the character “mountain” contained in the name Mount Fuji, you must also use the on yomi (derived from the Chinese) and would be read as \u201cFuji San\u201d, since the name is formed of three characters \u5bcc\u58eb\u5c71, <\/p>\n

    The Japanese and Chinese therefore make use of the same Chinese characters, it’s just that in the Japanese system they have a different pronunciation. <\/p>\n

    Moreover, while in China they exclusively<\/strong> use Chinese characters, in Japanese also use two spellings<\/strong>: hiragana (\u3072\u3089\u304c\u306a) and katakana (\u30ab\u30bf\u30ab\u30ca).<\/p>\n

    To learn characters, the Chinese use the phonetic transcription system called pinyin<\/a>, while the Japanese use furigana, or small hiragana characters placed above the character in question to indicate the pronunciation.<\/p>\n

    Numbers<\/h3>\n

    The numeric system<\/a> of both languages works the same way and the characters used to represent numbers are the same, even though there are phonetic differences:<\/p>\n

    Classifiers<\/h3>\n

    Another common aspect between the two languages is the use of classifiers<\/a>. When we want to firm numeric or quantitative expressions, such as \u201ctwo books\u201d, \u201cthree notebooks\u201d, \u201cfive pens\u201d, you have to use the number followed by a character that is conventionally called a classifier<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

    There are tens and tens of classifiers that vary on the basis of the noun that they, obviously, must classify. For example, if we want to say “three books” you must have the number followed by a specific classifier for objects that can be leafed-through. <\/p>\n

    Above all it must be said that the same character does not always classify the same type of objects, animals or people. For example, the character \u5339 in Chinese is read \u201cpi\u201d and is used as a classifier for horses, while in Japanese you say \u201cippiki\u201d or \u201chiki\u201d (the pronunciation varies on the number present) and is used to classify small animals like cats.<\/p>\n

    The second difference \u2013 which in my opinion is more revealing \u2013 is in the rule of use of classifiers which is different for both languages.<\/p>\n

    Rule of use in Chinese:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Number + Classifier + Noun. <\/p>\n

    Here’s an example: \u4e00\u53ea\u732b (yi zhi mao), which means \u201cone cat\u201d.<\/p>\n

    Rule of use in Japanese:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Noun + Particle \u304c (ga)+ Number + Classifier.<\/p>\n

    Here’s an example: \u732b\u304c\u4e00\u5339 ( neko ga ippiki), which also means \u201cone cat\u201d. <\/p>\n

    The simple question<\/h3>\n

    Chinese and Japanese have different ways of forming questions. The most common (an perhaps most used) consists in inserting a “particle” at the end of an affirmative phrase. <\/p>\n

    In Chinese, at the end of an affirmative phrase you insert the character \u5417 (ma ); in Japanese you would insert the particle \u304b (ka) instead.<\/p>\n

    Chinese:<\/p>\n

    Affirmative: \u4f60\u662f\u4e2d\u56fd\u4eba (ni shi zhongguo ren), which means: \u201cyou are Chinese\u201d
    \nInterrogative: \u4f60\u662f\u4e2d\u56fd\u4eba\u5417 (ni shi zhongguo ren ma), which means: \u201care you Chinese?\u201d <\/p>\n

    Japanese:<\/p>\n

    Affirmative: \u541b\u306f\u65e5\u672c\u4eba\u3067\u3059 (kimi wa nihon jin desu), which means: \u201cyou are Japanese\u201d
    \nInterrogative: \u541b\u306f\u65e5\u672c\u4eba\u3067\u3059\u304b (kimi wa nihon jin desu ka), which means: \u201care you Japanese?\u201d<\/p>\n

    Names and titles<\/h3>\n

    In Chinese and Japanese, the surname comes before the first name. Chinese names<\/a> are generally formed by 2 or maximum 3 characters; the Japanese instead can even go up to 4 characters (actually, it’s a common practice). <\/p>\n

    In both languages, titles and professions must follow the surname. In Chinese we have \u738b\u5148\u751f (Wang xiansheng), which means \u201cMister Wang\u201d; in Japanese we have \u5c0f\u6797\u5148\u751f (Kobayashi sensei), which means \u201cProfessor Kobayashi\u201d. It is noteworthy that the word \u5148\u751f is pronounced differently and also has a different meaning!<\/p>\n

    The main differences between Chinese and Japanese<\/h2>\n

    Below you’ll find what in my opinion are the most evident differences between the languages (and what a difference!):<\/p>\n

    Phrase structure<\/h3>\n

    The first difference is in the structure of phrases. While Chinese is an SVO language (subject \u2013 verb – object), Japanese is an SOV language (subject \u2013 object- verb). <\/p>\n

    Many scholars agree that the modern Japanese language is closer to classical Chinese than modern Chinese is. In fact it isn’t hard to find the SOV structure in classical Chinese. <\/p>\n

    However, in modern Chinese there is a construct<\/a> that anticipates the position of the object to the point of changing the phrase to SOV. I’m speaking of constuctions using \u628a (ba)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    Grammar<\/h3>\n

    While Chinese has an “easy” and reduced grammar (when compared to English or Italian), The Japanese have a “difficult” and rather large grammar. <\/p>\n

    In Chinese verbs and adjectives are not combined, in Japanese they are. A grammatical similarity is that both languages have a “theme-comment” structure. <\/p>\n

    I would, however, like to make a point: to me, one language isn’t more difficult than the others. There are just languages that are further off from our mother tongue and for this reason they’re more difficult to learn. <\/p>\n

    Nevertheless, I would like to share John Pasden’s impression<\/a>: according to him, if comparing the two languages, in the beginning, it is harder to learn the Japanese grammar than the Chinese; while it is harder to master pronunciation of Chinese more than Japanese. Long term, the difficulty tends to “flip flop”.<\/p>\n

    Pronunciation<\/h3>\n

    A colossal difference between the languages is the presence of tones in Chinese and their absence in Japanese. This is not just a difference that jumps out at your eyes (or ears), but it’s also something that makes learning and mastering Chinese pronunciation more difficult!<\/p>\n

    Is Chinese harder than Japanese?<\/div>\n

    This is a difficult question with mixed replies. It\u2019s well-known that Chinese is hard to learn<\/a> due to the many tones, pronunciation of words, and the work you need to put in to learn all the characters and idioms (Chengyu). <\/p>\n

    Yet, many claim that Chinese is hard to learn<\/a> in the beginning, but it gets easier after some time. The grammar is not that complex and nouns are not written or pronounced differently in singular or plural. Verbs aren\u2018t different for past, present and future tenses either, they just add the word \u201cle\u201d, written as \u4e86, after verbs in past tenses<\/p>\n

    . Many claim that Japanese is difficult due to the complex grammar and many rules in terms of formality. There are also gender differences in spoken Japanese, you must pay much attention to the way address and talk to people of different ages and professions.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    Is Chinese more useful than Japanese?<\/div>\n
    \n
    It depends on what your goals are. Chinese is spoken by almost ten times more people (over 1 billion). Unless you plan to live in Japan, Chinese is probably more useful. From a career point of view, if you can master Chinese, you\u2019ll not only be able to look for jobs in mainland China. <\/p>\n

    You\u2019ll have an advantage when applying for jobs or when doing business in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia. Keep in mind that there are tons of Chinese living overseas too.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    Does knowing Japanese help learn Chinese?<\/div>\n

    It does, for sure. If you\u2019re a Westerner (for example) and start from zero, a Japanese person will be able to read and write Chinese much faster. <\/p>\n

    The Japanese have that advantage as they have an alphabet, Kanji, which includes Chinese characters. But, the same as it goes with other nationalities, Japanese also struggle with the pronunciation when talking Chinese.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    Can Japanese read Chinese?<\/div>\n
    \n
    They can understand some parts of sentences, but not everything. As mentioned, the Japanese use an alphabet called Kanji that has characters that include Chinese characters.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    China doesn\u2019t have an alphabet and Chinese characters are written individually or together to represent a unit of meaning or a word. For example, the Chinese word for lipstick is \u53e3\u7ea2(Kouhong) where \u53e3 (Kou) means mouth and \u7ea2 (Hong) means red.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    This was during the time when Chinese people wrote characters on bamboo sticks, instead of on paper. The Chinese later adopted the Western system where we write horizontally from the left to the right. Still, you\u2019ll find it more common that people write vertically from top to bottom in places like Japan and Taiwan.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    There are less than 10 million native Minbei speakers. You can find them in Fuzhou and surrounding areas, but also in Taiwan (Matsu Islands), Thailand (Chandi Town and Lamae), Singapore, parts of Malaysia and Indonesia (Semarang and Surabaya). Minnan accent is often referred to as Hokkien, at least among native speakers in Singapore and Malaysia. It\u2019s spoken by around 10 million people.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    Conclusion<\/h2>\n

    As you have noticed, aside from a few similarities, Chinese and Japanese are two languages that stand on their own! I hope that the next time they ask you “what’s the difference between Chinese and Japanese?”, you’ll know how to respond handily, leaving the one asking you wide-eyed!<\/p>\n
