Before speaking about classifiers, it’s good to review the numbers 1 to 10 because they are indispensable for numerical constructions:<\/p>\n

Now that we’ve reviewed numbers, we can get going on our main talking point: classifiers. <\/p>\n
In Chinese, when formulating numeric or quantitative expressions, such as \u201ctwo books\u201d, \u201cthree notebooks\u201d, \u201cfive pens\u201d, the number must be followed by a character which is traditionally called a classifier. <\/p>\n
There are hundreds of classifiers that vary according to the noun that they must – appropriately – classify. For example, if we want to say “three books” after the number there must be a specific classifier for the readable objects.<\/p>\n
Keeping in mind that the classifier for the readable objects (books, novels) is \u672c (b\u011bn), the phrase “three books” will be formed this way:<\/p>\n
\u4e09\u672c\u4e66\u3002 Note that when using the number 2 in numerical constructions, it will no longer be \u4e8c (\u00e8r), but \u4e24 (li\u01ceng). The reason why is that the nominal syntagm \u201ctwo books\u201d, is said as \u4e24\u672c\u4e66 and not \u4e8c\u672c\u4e66 in Chinese.<\/p>\n Another basic thing to know is that there are some nouns that do not require the use of a classifier. For example, \u5e74 (ni\u00e1n) year and \u5929 (ti\u0101n) day. For which, \u201cone day\u201d will be \u4e00\u5929 (y\u012b ti\u0101n) and \u201cone year\u201d will be \u4e00\u5e74 (y\u012b ni\u00e1n).<\/p>\n A basic verb for composing the first phrases is \u6709 (y\u01d2u), which means \u201cto have\/to have been\u201d: \u5979\u6709\u4e24\u672c\u4e66\u3002 When you can’t remember the appropriate classifier for a noun, in extreme cases you can go to a so-called generic classifier: \u4e2a (ge). \u4e24\u4e2a\u5b66\u6821\u3002 There are tons of classifiers and the main problem for a foreigner isn’t so much knowing them all but rather using them in speech that is more written than spoken. For convenience, below we’ve listed a “short” list with some of the most-used classifiers.<\/p>\n \u628a (b\u01ce)<\/strong> is used for objects with handles that can be taken or lifted with one hand such as: d\u0101o \u5200 (knife)\uff0cch\u0101 \u53c9(fork)\uff0csh\u00e1o \u52fa(spoon)\uff0cy\u01d0zi \u6905\u5b50(seat), y\u01d4s\u01cen \u96e8\u4f1e (umbrella)\uff0cy\u00e1shu\u0101 \u7259\u5237 (toothbrush)\uff0cy\u00e0oshi \u94a5\u5319 (key).<\/p>\n y\u012b b\u01ce d\u0101o \u4e00\u628a\u5200 (one knife)\uff0cli\u01ceng b\u01ce ch\u0101 \u4e24\u628a\u53c9 (two forks)\uff0cli\u01ceng b\u01ce sh\u00e1o \u4e24\u628a\u52fa (two spoons)\uff0cw\u01d4 b\u01ce y\u01d0zi \u4e94\u628a\u6905\u5b50 (five seats).<\/p>\n \u672c (b\u011bn)<\/strong> is used for paper objects composed of several pages, like: sh\u016b\u4e66 (book)\uff0cz\u00e1zh\u00ec \u6742\u5fd7 (magazine)\uff0cli\u00e0nx\u00edb\u011bn \u7ec3\u4e60\u672c (notebook).<\/p>\n li\u01ceng b\u011bn sh\u016b \u4e24\u672c\u4e66 (two books)\uff0cs\u0101n b\u011bn z\u00e1zh\u00ec \u4e09\u672c\u6742\u5fd7 (three magazines)\uff0cq\u012b b\u011bn li\u00e0nx\u00edb\u011bn \u4e03\u672c\u7ec3\u4e60\u672c (seven notebooks).<\/p>\n \u573a (ch\u01ceng)<\/strong> is used for sporting competitions and shows, but also for rain and snow: b\u01d0s\u00e0i \u6bd4\u8d5b (race)\uff0cy\u012bnyu\u00e8hu\u00ec \u97f3\u4e50\u4f1a (concert)\uff0cdi\u00e0ny\u01d0ng \u7535\u5f71 (film), y\u01d4 \u96e8 (rain)\uff0cxu\u011b \u96ea (snow).<\/p>\n y\u012b ch\u01ceng di\u00e0ny\u01d0ng \u4e00\u573a\u7535\u5f71 (one film)\uff0cli\u01ceng ch\u01ceng b\u01d0s\u00e0i \u4e24\u573a\u6bd4\u8d5b (two games).<\/p>\n \u6ef4 (d\u012b)<\/strong>, which means “drop” is used for y\u01cenl\u00e8i \u773c\u6cea (tear)\uff0cshu\u01d0 \u6c34 (water)\uff0ch\u00e0n \u6c57 (sweat)\uff0cji\u01d4 \u9152 (alcohol).<\/p>\n y\u012b d\u012b shu\u01d0 \u4e00\u6ef4\u6c34 (a drop of water)\uff0cli\u01ceng d\u012b y\u01cenl\u00e8i \u4e24\u6ef4\u773c\u6cea (two tears).<\/p>\n \u5e45 (f\u00fa)<\/strong> is used for leaves and paintings: ch\u0101t\u00fa \u63d2\u56fe (illustrations)\uff0chu\u00e0 \u753b (painting).<\/p>\n y\u012b f\u00fa ch\u0101t\u00fa \u4e00\u5e45\u63d2\u56fe (one illustration)\uff0cli\u01ceng f\u00fa hu\u00e0 \u4e24\u5e45\u753b (two paintings).<\/p>\n \u4e2a (ge)<\/strong>, as already mentioned, is a generic classifier for human beings, three-dimensional objects, abstract things and when you can’t remember the most appropriate classifier: r\u00e9n \u4eba (person)\uff0cj\u012bd\u00e0n \u9e21\u86cb (egg)\uff0cli\u00e0nx\u00ed \u7ec3\u4e60 (exercises).<\/p>\n s\u0101n ge r\u00e9n \u4e09\u4e2a\u4eba (three people)\uff0cli\u01ceng ge j\u012bd\u00e0n \u4e24\u4e2a\u9e21\u86cb (two eggs).<\/p>\n \u6839 (g\u0113n)<\/strong> is used for long objects that are more or less thin, rigid or flexible like: zh\u0113n \u9488 (needle)\uff0czh\u00f9zi \u67f1\u5b50 (column)\uff0ct\u00f3ufa \u5934\u53d1 (hairs)\uff0czh\u00fazi \u7af9\u5b50 (bamboo).<\/p>\n li\u01ceng g\u0113n zh\u00fazi \u4e24\u6839\u7af9\u5b50 (two bamboo reeds).<\/p>\n \u67b6 (ji\u00e0)<\/strong> is used for larger items and machines such as: f\u0113ij\u012b\u98de\u673a (airplane)\uff0cg\u0101ngq\u00edn \u94a2\u7434 (piano), l\u00f9y\u012bnj\u012b \u5f55\u97f3\u673a (recorder)\uff0csh\u014duy\u012bnj\u012b \u6536\u97f3\u673a (radio).<\/p>\n s\u0101n ji\u00e0 f\u0113ij\u012b \u4e09\u67b6\u98de\u673a (three airplanes).<\/p>\n \u4ef6 (ji\u00e0n)<\/strong> is used for clothing that covers the upper half of the body, for business and gifts like: ch\u00e8nsh\u0101n \u886c\u886b (shirt)\uff0cd\u00e0y\u012b \u5927\u8863 (jacket)\uff0cm\u00e1oy\u012b \u6bdb\u8863 (sweater), sh\u00ec \u4e8b (thing, business), l\u01d0w\u00f9 \u793c\u7269 (gift).<\/p>\n li\u01ceng ji\u00e0n m\u00e1oy\u012b \u4e24\u4ef6\u6bdb\u8863 (two sweaters)\uff0cy\u012b ji\u00e0n ch\u00e8nsh\u0101n \u4e00\u4ef6\u886c\u886b (one shirt).<\/p>\n \u68f5 (k\u0113)<\/strong>, which means \u201cplant\u201d, is the classifier for all trees and some herbs and vegetables, for example: sh\u00f9 \u6811 (tree)\uff0cs\u014dngsh\u00f9 \u677e\u6811 (pine)\uff0cli\u01d4sh\u00f9 \u67f3\u6811 (willow)\uff0cl\u00fahu\u00ec \u82a6\u835f (aloe)\uff0cb\u00e1iy\u00e1ng \u767d\u6768 (poplar)\uff0cb\u00e1ic\u00e0i \u767d\u83dc (Chinese cabbage).<\/p>\n li\u01ceng k\u0113 sh\u00f9 \u4e24\u68f5\u6811 (two trees)\uff0cy\u012b k\u0113 b\u00e1ic\u00e0i \u4e00\u9897\u767d\u83dc (one Chinese cabbage).<\/p>\n \u9897 (k\u0113)<\/strong>, which means grain, is used for objects with a granular form like: zh\u0113nzh\u016b \u73cd\u73e0 (pearl)\uff0cx\u012bng \u661f j\u01d0ng \u4e95 (well). It is also used for utensils such as: gu\u014d \u9505 (pot), g\u0101ng \u7f38 (vase, jar). \u53e3k\u01d2u (mouth) it is also preferred as a classifier for the number of family members: <\/p>\n s\u00ec k\u01d2u r\u00e9n \u56db\u53e3\u4eba (four people).<\/p>\n \u5757 (ku\u00e0i)<\/strong>, which means \u201cpiece\u201d or \u201cslice\u201d, is used for pieces big and small of something that at times can be translated into Italian:<\/p>\n y\u1ecb\u0304 ku\u00e0i d\u00e0ng\u0101o \u4e00\u5757\u86cb\u7cd5 (a slice of cake).<\/p>\n \u7c92 (l\u00ec)<\/strong>, which means \u201cgrain\u201d or \u201ckernel\u201d, is used for smaller objects in granular form that require the above-cited \u9897 (grain) as a classifier: <\/p>\n y\u012b l\u00ec m\u01d0 \u4e00\u7c92\u7c73 (a grain of rice), s\u0101n l\u00ec k\u0101f\u0113id\u00f2u \u4e09\u7c92\u5496\u5561\u8c46 (three coffee beans).<\/p>\n \u8f86 (li\u00e0ng)<\/strong>, which means \u201cvehicle, is used for ground vehicles (military or civilian) like: ch\u0113 \u8f66 (vehicle), q\u00ecch\u0113 \u6c7d\u8f66 (automobile), t\u01cenk\u00e8 \u5766\u514b (tank), s\u0101nl\u00fanch\u0113 \u4e09\u8f6e\u8f66 (rickshaw).<\/p>\n y\u012b li\u00e0ng t\u01cenk\u00e8 \u4e00\u8f86\u5766\u514b (one tank).<\/p>\n \u95e8 (m\u00e9n)<\/strong>, which means “door” is used for k\u01ceosh\u00ec \u8003\u8bd5 (test), k\u00e8 \u8bfe (material, lesson), k\u00e8ch\u00e9ng \u8bfe\u7a0b (course of study).<\/p>\n li\u01ceng m\u00e9n k\u01ceosh\u00ec \u4e24\u95e8\u8003\u8bd5 (two tests).<\/p>\n \u7bc7 (pi\u0101n)<\/strong>, which means “section”, is used for written things that aren’t too long like w\u00e9nzh\u0101ng \u6587\u7ae0 (article), g\u00f9shi \u6545\u4e8b (story), but also for b\u00ecy\u00e8 l\u00f9nw\u00e9n \u6bd5\u4e1a\u8bba\u6587 (graduate thesis).<\/p>\n y\u012b pi\u0101n l\u00f9nw\u00e9n \u4e00\u7bc7\u8bba\u6587 (one thesis).<\/p>\n \u7247 (pi\u00e0n)<\/strong>, which means “thin slice”, is used for \u6811\u53f6 (leaf), mi\u00e0nb\u0101o \u9762\u5305 (bread), but also indicates vast extensions of the earth or water such as \u5927\u6d77 (see) or p\u00edngyu\u00e1n \u5e73\u539f (plain).<\/p>\n s\u0101n pi\u00e0nmi\u00e0n b\u0101o \u4e09\u7247\u9762\u5305 (three slices of bread).<\/p>\n \u88ad (x\u00ed)<\/strong> is a very formal classifier used for referring to complete suits.<\/p>\n y\u012bx\u00ed q\u00edp\u00e1o \u4e00\u88ad\u65d7\u888d (one Qipao).<\/p>\n \u9996 (sh\u01d2u)<\/strong>, which means \u201chead\u201d, is used for \u8bd7 (poem), g\u0113 \u6b4c (song), yu\u00e8q\u01d4 \u4e50\u66f2 (musical work).<\/p>\n li\u01ceng sh\u01d2u g\u0113 \u4e24\u9996\u6b4c (two songs).<\/p>\n \u6240 (su\u01d2)<\/strong> is used for buildings, in particular with d\u00e0xu\u00e9 \u5927\u5b66 (university).<\/p>\n li\u01ceng su\u01d2 d\u00e0xu\u00e9 \u4e24\u6240\u5927\u5b66 (two universities).<\/p>\n \u8258 (s\u014du)<\/strong> is used for ships and boats like chu\u00e1n \u8239 (boat), y\u00f3ul\u00fan \u6e38\u8f6e (cruise ship), d\u00f9chu\u00e1n \u6e21\u8239 (ferry), j\u016bnji\u00e0n \u519b\u8230 (warship), y\u00f3ul\u00fan \u6cb9\u8f6e (tanker) e y\u00fachu\u00e1n \u6e14\u8239 (fishing boat).<\/p>\n li\u01ceng s\u014du y\u00f3ul\u00fan \u4e24\u8258\u6cb9\u8f6e (two tankers).<\/p>\n \u6761 (ti\u00e1o)<\/strong>, which means “streak” is mainly used for long things that aren’t straight or rigid such as h\u00e9 \u6cb3 (river), sh\u00e9 \u86c7 (snakes), y\u00fa \u9c7c (fish), l\u01d0ngd\u00e0i \u9886\u5e26 (tie), q\u00fanzi \u88d9\u5b50 (skirt), k\u00f9zi \u88e4\u5b50 (pants), k\u00f9ch\u01ce \u88e4\u8869 (underwear), w\u00e9ij\u012bn \u56f4\u5dfe (scarf) and t\u00f3uj\u012bn \u5934\u5dfe (headscarf).<\/p>\n sh\u00ed ti\u00e1o sh\u00e9 \u5341\u6761\u86c7 (ten snakes).<\/p>\n \u5934 (t\u00f3u)<\/strong> is used for large quadruped animals like zh\u016b \u732a (pig), ni\u00fa \u725b (cow), sh\u012bzi \u72ee\u5b50 (lion), h\u01d4 \u864e (tiger), xi\u00f3ng m\u01d0 \u4e24\u7897\u7c73 \u201ctwo bowls of rice\u201d.<\/p>\n \u6279 (p\u012b)<\/strong>, which means \u201cconsignment\u201d, \u201clot\u201d, or \u201cgroup\u201d, is used for something in large quantities, in particular with hu\u00f2 \u8d27 \/ hu\u00f2w\u00f9 \u8d27\u7269 (goods), xu\u00e9sheng \u5b66\u751f (students).<\/p>\n y\u012b p\u012b hu\u00f2w\u00f9 \u4e00\u6279\u8d27\u7269 (a consignment of goods).<\/p>\n \u5ea7 (zu\u00f2)<\/strong> is used for mountains, buildings and all that doesn’t lean solidly on a floor, like f\u00e1ngzi \u623f\u5b50 (building), g\u014dngy\u00f9 \u516c\u5bd3 (condominium), li\u00e1ngqi\u00e1o \u6881\u6865 (bridge), zh\u014dngl\u00f3u \u949f\u697c (bell tower), sh\u0101n \u5c71 (mountain).<\/p>\n li\u01ceng zu\u00f2 sh\u0101n \u4e24\u5ea7\u5c71 (two mountains), y\u012b zu\u00f2 li\u00e1ngqi\u00e1o \u4e00\u5ea7\u6881\u6865 (one bridge).<\/p>\n \u5e2e (b\u0101ng) \/ \u4f19 (hu\u01d2)<\/strong>, which means “group” or “band”
