Today we interview Sean McGibney, Chief Marketing Officer of The Chairman’s Bao<\/a><\/strong>, a website dedicated to people that want to learn Chinese we discovered the past month<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Sean, thank you for accepting this interview. What is The Chairman’s Bao and in what way is different from the hundreds of websites that focus on Chinese learning?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We set out with one simple aim in creating The Chairman\u2019s Bao (TCB) – to create engaging, informative and interesting levelled content for those who learn Chinese<\/a>. It offers a great sense of achievement to be able to read news in a target language, but the nature of Chinese makes it extremely difficult for non-native speakers to read newspapers. Add into the mix a gap in intermediate to advanced resources for learning Chinese<\/a> and TCB was born! <\/p>\n

How and when was your online newspaper born?<\/strong><\/p>\n

In reality TCB was a couple of years in the planning but the website launched back in January 2015. It has been a rollercoaster 10 months but one that has also been greatly rewarding for all involved. <\/p>\n

Let’s suppose I’m studying Chinese and I end up on your website for the first time. How can I make the most of it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We start writing articles at HSK 3, so ideally users will already have a solid knowledge of beginner\u2019s Chinese. Upon signing up to the website, you not only have access to our full back catalogue of articles, but also a whole host of interactive features such as a live dictionary that scrolls as you read, intelligent flashcard system, audio for every article, and much more. <\/p>\n

Everybody finds the study style that best suits them and the site is easily adaptable to individual or group learning. In essence, sign up to the website, ensure you try out all of the features and find out what works best for you! <\/strong><\/p>\n

What is the identikit of your typical reader?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Five foot four inches tall, freckles and big feet\u2026 just kidding! We don\u2019t have a typical user and we are very fortunate to have a user base that spans all corners of the globe. I would say they all have three things in common: a willingness to learn, get involved and a passion for all things China!<\/p>\n

How many articles do you publish in a month and what criteria do you use to choose the articles you will translate and publish?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We never translate articles, rather our writers are given topics to research and write about \u2013 much like a journalist would. We choose articles based on what we as Chinese learners like to read. Interesting and exciting news stories, with a focus on China. We recently expanded our capacity and now produce around 21 articles per week \u2013 that\u2019s a lot of Chinese news to get your teeth stuck into! <\/p>\n

You explained how, for writing your articles, you only use words belonging to the HSK lists. What are the challenges of this constraint, during the writing and editorial process?<\/strong> <\/p>\n

We developed a HSK level<\/a> checker that is built into the backend of our website which helps us to grade articles. We then conform to a set of guidelines to ensure each article is a fair representation of the level we are trying to achieve. Any words that fall outside of the HSK word list and are still vital to the article are highlighted below in the article keywords. <\/p>\n

Looking at your “about” page, it seems that at the moment there at least 13 people involved on the project. I know \u2013 for personal experience \u2013 that after awhile it becomes difficult to invest time, energy and money on a project that, no matters how good it is, doesn’t offer a clear return of investment (being it money, career opportunities, fame or other). What are your goals, for The Chairman’s Bao?<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Our team is always growing which we are very thankful for. From our perspective, TCB has been a fantastic project that has allowed us to learn a great deal. We have been open from the beginning that TCB won\u2019t remain free forever – as you can imagine, it\u2019s not a cheap project to run. We hope that TCB will keep growing with the release of our mobile app and we also hope to venture into new languages in the future. <\/p>\n

What’s you favorite Chinese food?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Easy one –\u9ebb\u5a46\u8c46\u8150 (mapo doufu)<\/a>!<\/p>\n

Beside The Chairman’s Bao, what are your plans for the future?<\/strong><\/p>\n
