Traveling to Xi’an – The Former Capital of China

October 21, 2016 by Sapore di Cina Leave a Comment

Xi'an travel guide

Xi’an is the capital of the Shaanxi province (not to be confused with Shanxi), and is one of the former imperial capitals. However, it is not the only former imperial capital of China, although the majority of them (Anyang, Kaifeng, Zhengzhou, and Luoyang) are found in the neighboring Henan province.

Nonetheless, after Beijing and Shanghai, Xi’an is probably the best-known city in China, and the Terracotta Warriors, a World Heritage Site since 1987, is without a doubt its most popular tourist attraction. This guide tries to give all the information necessary for you to enjoy this emblematic city.

Below is a list of subjects covered in this guide. You can click on the titles to skip directly to the section that interests you:

From Xi’an to Kunming on bicycle – The story of a slow ride

October 1, 2016 by Sapore di Cina Leave a Comment

Xian-Kunming by bike

This article was written by Riccardo Volpato, who wanted to recount his bicycling adventure from Xi’an to Kunming.

Landing in China on an university exchange program, after a few months of studying in Beijing I discovered that the dates of my exams left me a month and a half of visa to explore this enormous country. I chose to do so by bicycle so as to be able to freely visit the large cities, untouched villages and virgin valleys.

Planning in Beijing and preparing in Tianjin

Fascinated by travel stories about the natural beauty of Yunnan (云南), I chose Kunming as my final destination (昆明), capital of the region. Realizing the impossibility of pedaling – at my rhythm as a slow observer – the 2700 kilometers that separate Beijing and my destination, I decided to begin my trip from Xi’an.

With the intention of testing my improvised cycling equipment, I decided to first pedal to nearby Tianjin, then ship the bike and take the train to Xi’an. [Read more…]

Traveling in Shaanxi, in the center of imperial China

September 21, 2015 by Rita Andreetti 2 Comments

Xi'an

This guide contains advice for visiting the main sites of Shaanxi, the central region of China, known above all for its capital Xi’An, the ancient Chinese capital.

Lo Shaanxi (not to be confused with Shanxi) is an extensive region, but the recommended sites are in the areas around Xi’An, where the majority of tourists are concentrated: rather, a multitude, considering that this city is the second most-visited place in China.

Xi’An is rich in archaeology, which you can’t ignore if you come here. OK, there there’s Hua Shan, one of the five sacred Chinese mountains, to add a touch of sport and challenge to sentimental trips.

In this guide you can find information about:

  • The city of Xi’An;
  • The Terracotta Army:
  • The tomb of Emperor Jingdi (or sunkem museum of Han Yangling) and surrounding archaeological sites: the tomb of Qian Ling and the Famen Temple;
  • Mount Hua (or Hua Shan);
  • Hancheng and the village of Dangjiacun, Yan’an.

Hua Shan mountain: Is this the most dangerous hiking trail in the world?

February 24, 2014 by Sapore di Cina 5 Comments

Hua Shan mountain

Many tourists come to Xi’an to visit the Terracotta Army and then leave as fast as they can. Even if some of them decide to explore my beloved Muslim quarter and the Grate Mosque, few tourists leave Xi’an knowing what is Hua Shan, one of the most beautiful scenarios in China.
